Time for a new FreeSBIE ISO image

So, RELENG_7 was branched and it seems a good idea to release a new ISO image of FreeSBIE based on it.

It also looks like people want it (thank you, Julian :) ), so I think it is a really good idea.

I must admit I’ve not a lot of time to work on it, so I’ll probably end up using the same configuration of FreeSBIE-2.0.1 .

The great news is unionfs will be enabled by default, like in FreeSBIE-1.x . The only caveat is: will it be stable enough? I know Hiroki SATO committed some fixes to it to HEAD just after the “approval lock” on HEAD was removed, and it may be a good idea to backport them to RELENG_7, so that users gain a better FreeSBIE experience. Time will tell.

To warm up my building environment, at the moment I’m building a 8-CURRENT base ISO images with few packages.

Be ready for FreeSBIE-$SOMECODENAME ! (suggestions welcome).

Can you post a direct link? I didn’t see one on the freesbie site — only saw FreeSBIE 2.0.1-RELEASE.

Also, isn’t there a live CD for CURRENT_7? Not overly familiar with BSD- could you give me a quick overview between the differences?

It looks like I wasn’t clear. The image is not ready yet. I’m working 14 on it. I’ll announce it availability on this blog, once it’s ready.

    Not that I’m aware of..

To make a long story short:
    FreeBSD: performance and usability
NetBSD: portability (it runs on veeery old and exotic hardware)
    OpenBSD: security-aware
    This is quite reductive, obviously.

    Hi Matteo,

We have actually created the liveCD based on FreeBSD 6.2 Stable using Freesbie. You can find the information here -

Same like you as we have actually waited for the unionfs to be ported stably so that we can work on new version of liveCD when FBSD 7.0 is shipped. Unionfs in 6.2 was broken and we can’t really use it.

    Cheers ;]
